‘Susie always gets it right [...] One of the most perfect food and wine matches I’ve ever tasted on this show’ Michelin-starred TV chef Paul Rankin on BBC1′s Saturday Kitchen, April 2012
Susie Barrie is an award-winning wine writer, broadcaster and Master of Wine.
Susie regularly appears on Saturday Kitchen (BBC 1), recommending wines that frequently sell out within a few hours – not surprising considering up to 3 million of you tune in every week!
Other TV and radio credits include Daily Cooks (ITV), Great Food Live (UKTV Food), Food Network Daily (Carlton Food Network), Sky News, LBC Radio, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Scotland.
Susie initially trained and worked as an actress (starring in ITV’s cult comedy Dare to Believe and the BBC’s Aquilla). However, having been brought up in a string of Yorkshire pubs and hotels, the lure of food and wine eventually proved too strong and she went on to study wine. In September 2009 she passed the notoriously difficult Master of Wine examinations at the first attempt and is now an MW – one of only 300 worldwide.
Susie is also the author of two books: Champagne and Sparkling Wines and Discovering Wine Country – Northern Spain, the second of which picked up a Gourmand World Award in 2006. Other books Susie has contributed to include two editions of the Saturday Kitchen cookbook, In the Mood for Entertaining and Wine Made Easy.
Susie’s writing also extends to magazines and she has contributed to the likes of Decanter, Wine and Spirit, FHM, Harpers, Drinks International, The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, The Glasgow Herald Magazine, Spain and In the Know.
Susie is a familiar face at events around the country (BBC Good Food Show, Spirit of Christmas, The Wine Show, London International Wine Fair) and is acknowledged as having an informed but no-nonsense approach to wine. Whether hosting large-scale events or a ‘girls’ night in’, her friendly, easy manner is appealing to audiences of all types.
When she’s not broadcasting and writing about wine, hosting wine tastings, or judging in international wine competitions, Susie can most often be found with her head in a recipe book, running around the local water meadows or singing.
Susie’s latest and most exciting project to date is the Wine School and Wine Club she runs with her husband and fellow Master of Wine, Peter Richards. In recognition of these projects and their other work, Susie and Peter were jointly awarded the prestigious IWSC Communicator of the Year award 2010.
