Saturday Kitchen wine
(by Susie Barrie MW)
This called for some Christmas shopping in Kingston…
Wine for roasted pheasant salad with pancetta, chestnuts and pomegranate by Theo Randall
-
Araldica Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2012, Italy (£8.99, Waitrose)
Susie’s comments: A quite beautiful dish that I tried with Theo at the BBC Good Food Show as well as later at home (told you it was nice). This meaty, savoury Barbera is a brilliant match, and great value. ‘She’s done it again: spectacular! I didn’t think there were wines out there for this price’ commented James on the show. ‘Perfect combination,’ added Theo, noting that the dish came from the same region as the wine. It all makes sense!
Wine to go with Yotam Ottolenghi’s membrillo and stilton quiche with roasted Brussels sprouts and pomelo
-
King’s Thorn Pinot Gris 2013, New Zealand (from £9.99, Majestic)
Susie’s comments: Oh wow. If you’re looking for a flavoursome but wholesome dish as a pick-me-up over the Christmas period, this is it. It’s sensational. I must confess to having slight reservations when I first read the recipe but this man Ottolenghi is a genius. What’s more, it’s surprisingly wine friendly – it also went with a good Nero d’Avola. But this is a delicious match. James was a fan, enthusing: ‘This one is just unbelievable!’ Yotam agreed: ‘she’s done an amazing job, it’s brilliant, it doesn’t take over and lets all those flavours come out.’ Thanks guys!
Links, recipes and heaven & hell
Ronnie O’Sullivan’s heaven and hell, as expertly cooked by James Martin, are as below together with my wine matches:
Halibut with sautéed mushrooms and potato wrapped deep-fried quails’ eggs – Journey’s End Honeycomb Chardonnay 2014, South Africa (£10, M&S)
Smoked salmon and haddock fishcake with a chive beurre blanc and wilted spinach – Cape Peninsula Sauvignon Blanc 2014, South Africa (£10, M&S)
Thanks to James, Ronnie, Theo and Yotam. Thanks also to the fabulous team at Cactus TV, as well as Waitrose and Majestic for their help. And finally thanks to you for reading!
I’ll upload the wine VT clips soon. In the meantime you can catch the show via Iplayer. You can find the recipes via this link. Enjoy!
