Bordeaux bargains

Following on from my tasting of more than a hundred 2009 clarets, here’s my article from the December edition of Decanter magazine on the subject of good value Bordeaux for Christmas.

There’s something about Christmas that makes you reach for the classics so hopefully this listing will be useful (not to mention easy on the pocket). I tasted through a fair few wines to arrive at this selection – Bordeaux can be nothing if variable and over-priced – but all of these are lovely wines in their different styles (there are whites and sweets as well as red).

The idea is that these wines will go with your festive food, so I make some suggestions along these lines too, from mutton to salmon to pheasant, turkey, venison, tarte tatin – and, of course, turkey (as well as its curried rendition).
