Our wine of the Week
Of late, Susie and I have been inundated with frothy-mouthed press releases beseeching us to drink (and, I suppose, recommend) everything from Argentine Torrrontes to English Bacchus.
Personally, we don’t really do themed drink-alongs, even if it is the World Cup. So any glasses we’ll be raising (or seeking consolation from) will be full of our favourite wines, whatever flag they happen to wave.
At this time of year, when everything is green and fresh, we like nothing better than a well-chilled Sauvignon Blanc as a tangy aperitif and a versatile food match.
With this in mind, we couldn’t resist recommending the fantastic Viña Leyda ‘Garuma Vineyard’ Sauvignon Blanc 2009, which is on offer at Oddbins until 20th June – down from £8.99 to £6.99. It’s bursting with herbal and crunchy green flavours, and has a wonderfully vibrant tangy citrus core. Serious stuff; benchmark new-wave Chilean Savvy.
Enjoy it with a succulent piece of pan-fried salmon with an asparagus and lemongrass risotto. (Or, if you don’t have time for such flim-flammery while you’re watching the telly, it’s also ideal with fish, chips and mushy peas.)
