Saturday Kitchen NYE

(by Peter Richards MW and Susie Barrie MW)

Susie-in-action-for-Saturday-KitchenWe headed out in London for a joint wine shoot to get the New Year’s Eve celebrations started (or help lay plans for a delicious night, at least!) Any of these wines and dishes would make a fabulous addition to the big night’s festivities.

Wine for Jason Atherton’s Cornish fish stew:

  • Petit Chablis 2012 UVC (£11.04, Majestic)

Susie’s comments: We initially thought a nice rustic Picpoul would be the ideal thing for this utterly delicious dish, which has echoes of southern French fish stews. But we were surprised, when we tried it, just how seamlessly the Petit Chablis tied everything together. Try these two together on New Year’s Eve and you are guaranteed a delicious evening.

Wine to go with slow-cooked mutton by Thomasina Miers:

  • Extra Special Old Vine Garnacha 2013 (from £5, Asda)

Peter’s comments: Bargain! This is a richly flavoured dish and wines that are too big, oaky or dry tend to jar. The juicy, succulent fruit in this brilliant value red ties in brilliantly with the strong flavours. Olé!

Susie-and-Peter-filming-Saturday-Kitchen-2014Wine match for Ben Tish’s pig cheeks:

  • Sette Vigne red 2010 (£7.99, Waitrose)

Susie’s comments: Our first instinct was for a perfumed Spanish red to go with the tender pig’s cheek and garlic potatoes. But it’s that brilliantly bittersweet character of this Italian red that picks up on the orange and dark chocolate in the dish. That extra bit of bottle age (it’s a 2010 vintage) helps it tie in with the oloroso and thyme, too.
