South American Syrah tasting
Is Syrah the Cinderella of South American wine?
That’s the question I ask at the start of this piece, noting how often Syrah is overlooked in favour of more glamorous rivals (Cabernet, Malbec, Tannat etc).
But it’s a shame because Syrah has huge potential in South America, as this tasting (for Decanter magazine) showed. The top-rated wine (from Casa Marin) was simply stunning. And there were plenty more very fine examples.
It was great to be able to compare and contrast top Syrahs from Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. But you get the sense that Syrah still needs its fairy godmothers to help raise it to the next level. In the meantime, we’ll keep buying…
