Wine of the Week
(by peter & susie)
We seem to have been discussing fine (i.e. expensive) wine quite a bit lately – so here’s a welcome antidote.
It comes in the form of a delicious and hugely gluggable Italian red from Haynes Hanson & Clark that is colossally good value.
The Vetriano Sangiovese 2012, Puglia IGT, 12.5% is both easy-going and refined, with ripe sweet fruit flavours and hints of tobacco and roasted herbs. It’s soft, juicy and food-friendly. Brilliant either on its own or with simple food from pepperoni pizza to bangers and mash (maybe even a barbecued lamb kofta when the weather picks up). A steal at £6.55 (or £5.79 if you buy a case of 12).
Haynes Hanson & Clark has recently opened a shop near us in Whitchurch (Hampshire) to add to their other stores in Kensington and Stow-on-the-Wold. What’s more, they’re holding their pre-budget wine prices until 30th April (wine duty went up with inflation this month) so, while a visit is always recommended, doing this sooner rather than later will be worth it from a financial perspective too.
