Morandé One to One Gewürztraminer 2016

Morandé One to One Gewürztraminer 2016, Chile, 13%

(from £6.99, Majestic)

First things first. The Gewürztraminer grape isn’t for everyone. (Even if you can pronounce it properly…) It can be super perfumed and luscious in style, a bit oily and rich, so it can easily put people off. But this one’s different.

I’m a big fan of Chilean producer Morandé, whose winemaker Ricardo Baettig is a top talent. Their Gewürztraminer is regularly fresher, juicier and less exaggerated than most – which also means it makes an easier match for food. I recommended this on Saturday Kitchen to go with Andi Oliver’s belly pork with torched chilli sugar. A wonderful combination – it worked better than all the more classic matches for pork you might think of, like Chenin Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris etc. It’s also amazing value at this price. Andi said it was, ‘delicious, really beautiful’. (7/10, Peter, August 2016)
