Great value supermarket white Burgundy
Extra Special Bourgogne Chardonnay 2014, France
(£9, Asda)
On Saturday Kitchen this weekend, culinary maestro Daniel Galmiche was cooking some delicious chicken, leek and wild mushroom parcels with a chicory and radish salad.
We tried out quite a few things with it but it was definitely an elegant, classic style of white that worked best. Pouilly-Fumé brought out the lemon and tarragon elements of the recipe. But the creamy sauce really needed something broader – and this great value take on white Burgundy worked seamlessly. Creamy, lemony perfection. Daniel made the valid point that many people automatically think of red with chicken but white is usually a better match. ‘Perfect, really happy’ he said, ‘thank you, Susie!’ Show host Glynn Purnell – who knows his onions when it comes to wine – added that it was ‘quite quaffable as well without the food’ but that it went well with the tarragon and bitter leaves.
