Brush off the BBQ red

Beefsteak Club Malbec 2015, Argentina, 13%

(£8.79, Waitrose)

At the Waitrose spring wine tasting there were plenty of wines I could have recommended but the sun was shining as I headed home and the idea of a weekend BBQ more than a little tempting.

With this in mind, I decided my recommendation of the day would be a BBQ red. I’m not suggesting it’s a particularly complex wine and, in spite of its name, it’s refreshingly modest in body and alcohol. But isn’t that exactly what we all want from the ultimate BBQ red? When you’re eating outdoors with the smoky aromas of perfectly charred steak or lamb, what could be better than a soft and juicy, medium-bodied, black cherry and herb-scented red?

With its contemporary packaging and relatively modest price tag, this is definitely a bottle to stick in your trolley as summer 2016 hots up. (Susie, 6.5/10, May 2016)
