Gloriously unpronounceable Greek red
Thymiopoulos Xinomavro 2012, Greece, 13.5%
(£10.50, Marks & Spencer)
We are huge fans of Greek wine and this is a brilliant buy. I recommended it on Saturday Kitchen to a typically inventive dish by chef Michael O’Hare (of The Man Behind the Curtain in Leeds) but which centred around wagyu – and this wine is a belter with beef.
It has quite a rugged feel to it, with fresh acidity and pretty firm tannin, but once you put it with protein-rich food it just mellows and becomes both beautifully refreshing and gastronomic. ‘Delicious – really, really good’ was Michael’s reaction. Give it a try and go Greek! (Peter, 6.5/10, May 2016)
