Oreinos Helios Agiorgitiko Seméli Dry Rosé 2017

Oreinos Helios Agiorgitiko Seméli Dry Rosé 2017, 13%, Greece

(£8.50, The Wine Society)

Wow!

The colour on this wine is something else – vivid rich cherry red, really deep for a rosé, which gives you a hint of what’s to come…

This is a pink wine that packs a punch. Full of cherry and summer fruit flavours. Touch of spice. Quite full bodied and full flavoured (the opposite end of the spectrum from your classic Provençal pink). Think more in terms of Navarra rosé and you’ll get the idea.

Importantly, it’s not sweet or cloying – it’s really refreshing and food-friendly. (It was grown at 600m altitude.)

We enjoyed this with butterflied leg of lamb with watermelon, halloumi and mint salad. Spot on. Because it has that extra intensity, it can cope with some pretty robust flavours on the plate.

If the weather’s warm, you can chill it down and think of it as an alternative to a red.
