Tim Adams Clare Valley Semillon 2014
Tim Adams Clare Valley Semillon 2014, Australia
(from £9, Tesco or via WineSearcher)
This wine is one of the best in Tesco’s range – and one of the most reliable (of the very few) decent oaked whites under a tenner in the UK.
With the zesty acidity you’d expect of good Ozzie Semillon and elegant oaking, it’s super versatile with food. It went brilliantly with Ben Tish’s roast chicken on sourdough with peas, morels and wild garlic mayonnaise – hence choosing it as my Saturday Kitchen pairing.
It’s a no-nonsense wine so it goes brilliantly with easy-going, hearty food like this. True, it can taste quite punchy on its own – but put it with food and it just becomes a seamless part of the meal. Like the very best wines do.
‘Fantastic – the nuttiness and creaminess works really well,’ said Ben, before kindly tweeting after the show: ‘Really great match Peter – as usual’.
