‘Give us a tasting featuring fine wines from around the world – and make it interesting.’

That was the brief. So I headed over to Portugal with a spring in my step…

I wanted to showcase a range of styles. And throw in some new-wave wines to raise eyebrows and provoke discussion – as well as a couple of established classics.

This is what I came up with. What do you think?

All the wines showed well in different ways. But one which really entranced was this one – the Tolpuddle Pinot Noir 2022 from Coal River in Tasmania.

We’ve already rhapsodised about this wine on our podcast: Australian Pinot Noir Comes of Age. But it was great seeing it in a line-up with other top, top wines and still see it shine.

This wine combines the elegance and grace of Pinot Noir with a captivating bouquet that ranges from bitter summer berry fruit to floral, sweet spice, herbal sappy and forest floor hints.

It’s complex and compelling. Well worth a place in any Burgundy lover’s rack.

(Oh, and the Barca Velha 1985 and Sandeman 1963 were pretty insanely special too…but that’s for another time!)
