Wine Atlas St Chinian

Wine Atlas St Chinian 2013, France

(£5.79, Asda)

A really savoury and serious red for the price level. This was my Saturday Kitchen choice to match Rosie Birkett’s carpaccio with panzanella – not an easy job but this wine really brought out the Mediterranean feel of the dish.

I called it the ‘thinking drinker’s choice’ and it’s a canny buy. ‘Peter has nailed it again,’ enthused show host Michel Roux Jr, while noting it was ‘great value’ and best served lightly chilled, a point with which Rosie enthusiastically agreed. Wolfgang Puck said he was worried about the tomato salad and the wine but the bread, garlic and herbs make it a ‘great match’. Not bad for under £6. (Peter, 6.5/10, June 2016)
